Food and fuel from plant biomass – will there be enough to go around?

The carbon cycle is driven by relative rates of photosynthesis and respiration. The balance between these processes is fundamentally affected by patterns of land use, vegetation type, and management practices, and ultimately determines total photosynthate available to feed and fuel humanity. Using empirical, simulation, and theoretical approaches, this symposium will explore the regulation of ecosystem carbon balance and the capacity of global photosynthesis to feed an ever-growing human population.
