Sponsored by the American Society for Photobiology

10:15 Harry Frank (Chair)

Spectroscopic properties and dynamics of the excited states of polyenes and carotenoids

10:45 Tomas Polivka
Variability of carotenoid-chlorophyll energy transfer pathways in light-harvesting complexes of microorganisms

11:15 Diana Kirilovsky
The cyanobacterial orange carotenoid protein (OCP) Interactions with the phycobilisome and the Fluorescence Recovery Protein (FRP)

 11:45 Luca Dall'Osto
Control of thylakoid membrane composition by xanthophylls

12:15 Manuel Rodríguez-Concepción
Regulation of plant carotenoid biosynthesis: learning from a weed

The Symposium on Carotenoids will feature talks on the photochemistry and photophysics of carotenoids and will deal with the mechanisms by which these molecules accomplish light-harvesting and photoprotection.  Information on how carotenoids control the composition of pigment-protein complexes in thylakoid membranes and the manner in which carotenoid biosynthesis is regulated in plants will also be presented.
